My cute grandma Nan had a term that I absolutely love, and it is quite appropriate in many situations:
First you abhor it. Then you accept it. Then you embrace it.
Think about it...you might find a situation in your life when this has been true.
I'll share a couple of mine with you.
It all started with this sweet little one:
Here he is at 2 years old. A devil child.
This is a picture of him actually running away from me at a park. I was running at full speed.
note: he is still ahead of me.
There were all sorts of things that I had in mind that I would never do as a mother.
Before I actually was a mother.
Then Hudda came along. And then he turned 2.
And I had to do a little tweaking of my mothering beliefs.
First rule out the door?

First your abhor it: "I can't believe that mother has her child on a leash! I am never going to do that! What kind of parent can't control their old child?
Then you accept it: "I can kind of see the point of a leash. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad. It would definitely keep Hudson safe after his numerous attempts at running away from me. I'll have to think about getting one."
Then you embrace it: "I love this leash! It's the best invention ever...I've got total peace of mind knowing my child is in my sight at all times! I'm going to recommend this to every mom I know!"

See what I mean?

First you abhor it: "Who is this Adam Lambert? Who does he think he is? He's so obnoxious, and is he wearing eyeliner? What is this world coming to??
Me, watching Adam Lambert be interviewed on Oprah last week
Then you accept it: "He's really great in this interview. So down-to-earth. I really like his personality. He's not so bad after all."Me, watching Adam Lambert perform "What Do You Want From Me" on Oprah
(yep, it's a link...and be patient. It's totally worth it!)

Then you embrace it: "Oh my gosh, I love him!! Love the song, love the sexy pompadour, love the guyliner!! I think I have a crush (even though he plays for the other team. So what? I wonder how Steve would look with guyliner? Would he go for black nail polish?) I'm going to go download this song and his music video right now.
And I'm going to start affectionately calling him Lambie.
